Same family is not the same part. Engines and transmissions in one family can differ in electronics, mounts and accessories. The supplier confirms fit with your VIN before you buy.

Check before you buy a used 5.7 Hemi

  • Match the generation. A 2009-or-later 5.7 has variable cam timing, revised heads and different spark plugs from a 2003–2008 engine. Give the supplier your VIN so they match the generation.
  • MDS or non-MDS? Engines with cylinder deactivation use different lifters and controls. Match what your vehicle was built with.
  • Check the intake. From 2009 the intake manifold is model-specific: Ram trucks and non-hybrid Aspen and Durango use an active manifold with a short-runner valve; cars and Jeeps use a passive one. Tell the supplier which you have.
  • Ask what's included. Long block only, or complete with intake, accessories and harness.
  • Get mileage, testing and warranty in writing. Ask for the donor vehicle's mileage, how the engine was tested, the warranty term and the freight cost to your ZIP before you pay.

5.7 Hemi questions

How much does a used 5.7 Hemi engine cost?

Used-yard asking prices for a 5.7 Hemi typically ran $1,688 to $4,316 on October 21, 2026. That range runs from the lowest version's 25th percentile to the highest version's 75th percentile, across 5 versions (462 priced listings). Remanufactured units were listed from $3,599 to $4,199 (16 offers). Prices vary by version, mileage and shipping, so the supplier quotes your exact part.

When did the 5.7 Hemi get variable cam timing?

From the 2009 model year, on every application. The same update revised the cylinder heads and switched to gasket-seat spark plugs.

Does every 5.7 Hemi have MDS?

No. Some do, but manual-transmission versions and, from 2009, the Ram Heavy Duty were built without MDS.

Will a 2009-or-later 5.7 fit my 2003–2008 vehicle?

Check with the supplier first. The later engine has variable cam timing and different heads and spark plugs, so they need your VIN to match the right one.
