Which Nissan Altima CVT do you have?

2007–2012 sedan, 2008–2013 coupe (fourth generation, L32)

A 6-speed manual was standard at first and the CVT was optional. By the 2010 facelift the CVT was standard on most trims and the manual was dropped from dealer orders, though the SR could still be customer-ordered with a manual. The CVT used with the 3.5 V6 is claimed to handle higher torque than other belt CVTs, and used-yard listings give the 2.5 and 3.5 units different interchange numbers.

2013–2018 (fifth generation, L33)

Wikipedia lists two transmissions: a Jatco CVT8 with an L gear and a Jatco CVT7 with a manual mode, both badged Xtronic. It does not say which engine got which, so the supplier needs your VIN. Wikipedia describes this generation's CVT as refined and 8 lb lighter than before.

2019 and later (sixth generation, L34)

Jatco CVT8 Xtronic. Used-yard listings include a 2.5 AWD unit for 2020, and give the 2.0, the 2.5 FWD and the 2.5 AWD units separate interchange numbers.

Altima Hybrid

The fourth-generation Altima Hybrid also used a CVT, with the 2.5 QR25DE. Used-yard listings keep it apart from the regular CVT, so tell the supplier if your car is a hybrid.

Same family is not the same part. Engines and transmissions in one family can differ in electronics, mounts and accessories. The supplier confirms fit with your VIN before you buy.

Check before you buy a used Nissan Altima CVT

  • Match the generation. Used-yard listings give each generation's CVT its own interchange number, and the 2013–2018 car came with one of two Jatco units.
  • Match the engine. Used-yard listings give the 2.5 and 3.5 versions, and the 2.0 in later cars, different interchange numbers.
  • FWD or AWD? EPA records include all-wheel-drive Altimas, and on the 2020 car the AWD unit has its own interchange number.
  • Hybrid or emissions version? The Altima Hybrid's CVT is listed separately, and some 2.5 units are split by California or federal emissions. Your VIN settles both.
  • Get mileage, testing and warranty in writing. Ask for the donor vehicle's mileage, how the transmission was checked, the warranty term and the freight cost to your ZIP before you pay.
