Which 6.6 Duramax do you have?
LBZ (VIN D, 2006–2007 Classic)
The most sought-after Duramax: a strengthened block, stronger rods and pistons, and no diesel particulate filter, since the DPF arrived with the LMM. Rated 360 hp and 650 lb-ft. The 2007 LBZ came only in the Classic (old-body) trucks. Some late-2005 and early-2006 LBZ engines carry VIN 2 and the LLY tune, and Hollander files the VIN 2 and VIN D 2006 engines under one number.

The first Duramax, rated 300 hp and 520 lb-ft. Hollander splits it into two numbers by emissions option (Federal NF2 versus California or NF4), so give the supplier your full VIN.

Added a variable-geometry turbo and an EGR valve, rated 310 hp and 605 lb-ft. Its valve covers let a mechanic reach the injectors without removing them.

The new-body 2007 trucks onward, with a diesel particulate filter, rated 365 hp and 660 lb-ft. The Express van version is a separate Hollander number from the pickup engine.

The LML added a Bosch CP4 fuel pump, piezo injectors and DEF (urea) injection, rated 397 hp and 765 lb-ft. The LGH went into vans and 2011 chassis-cab HD trucks and has its own Hollander number.

Rated 445 hp and 910 lb-ft, raised to 470 hp and 975 lb-ft for the 2024 model year. Hollander splits it into two part numbers; its yard donor records put mostly 2017–2019 trucks under one and 2020-on trucks under the other.

- Read the 8th digit of your VIN. 1 is an LB7, 2 an LLY (or an early LBZ), D an LBZ, 6 an LMM, 8 an LML, L an LGH and Y an L5P.
- Classic or new body for 2007? A 2007 Classic truck has the LBZ; a 2007 new-body truck has the LMM. They are different engines with different part numbers.
- Pickup, van or chassis cab? Van and chassis-cab engines (LMM van, LGH) carry their own part numbers and lower ratings. Tell the supplier exactly what the engine came out of.
- Match the emissions equipment. The LMM added a diesel particulate filter and the LML added DEF injection. Your truck's exhaust and controls must match the engine it was built with.
- Get mileage, testing and warranty in writing. Ask for the donor truck's mileage, how the engine was tested, what is included, the warranty term and the freight cost to your ZIP before you pay.

Known 6.6 Duramax wear points
- Wikipedia notes injector problems on the LB7. GM redesigned the LLY valve covers so the injectors could be replaced without removing them, which cut labor cost. (Wikipedia: LLY)
- Emissions hardware grows with each version: an EGR valve from the LLY, a diesel particulate filter from the LMM, and DEF (urea) injection plus the Bosch CP4 fuel pump on the LML. (Wikipedia: LLY, Wikipedia: LMM, Wikipedia: LML)

Heavy-duty pickups are largely absent from the U.S. EPA vehicle records, so each row is backed by Wikipedia plus Hollander yard records. Wikipedia also lists the Duramax in the GMC Savana, the Chevrolet Kodiak and GMC TopKick medium-duty trucks and the 2006 Hummer H1 Alpha; no second source here covers those, so they are left off the table. Always confirm by VIN.
6.6 Duramax questions
How much does a used 6.6 Duramax engine cost?
Used-yard asking prices for a 6.6 Duramax typically ran $2,450 to $10,441 on October 22, 2026. That range runs from the lowest version's 25th percentile to the highest version's 75th percentile, across 8 versions (682 priced listings). Prices vary by version, mileage and shipping, so the supplier quotes your exact part.
Why is the LBZ Duramax so sought after?
Wikipedia credits its strength and reliability, and it came before the diesel particulate filter. GM strengthened the block, rods and pistons over the LLY.
How do I tell an LBZ from an LLY?
Check the 8th digit of the VIN: D is an LBZ. A 2 can be an LLY or an early LBZ with the LLY tune, so send the full VIN and the build date and the supplier confirms which one you have.
Will a Duramax from an Express van fit my pickup?
Not as a straight swap. Van engines carry their own part numbers and lower ratings. Ask the supplier for an engine from the same kind of vehicle as yours.
