Which 10R80 do you have?

10R80

The standard, non-hybrid version, used in the F-150, Expedition, Mustang, Ranger, Transit and Navigator.

10R80 MHT (hybrid)

A hybrid version used in the 2020–2023 Explorer HEV, Police Interceptor Utility HEV, Lincoln Aviator HEV and, from 2021, the F-150 PowerBoost. A PowerBoost F-150 needs this version, not a standard 10R80.

GM 10L80 (not a Ford part)

The 10-speed came out of a Ford–GM joint venture, and each company builds its own version. GM's is the 10L80, built at GM plants for the Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon Denali, Escalade, Camaro SS and Silverado/Sierra 1500. This page covers the Ford 10R80.

Same family is not the same part. Engines and transmissions in one family can differ in electronics, mounts and accessories. The supplier confirms fit with your VIN before you buy.

Check before you buy a used 10R80

  • Hybrid or not? F-150 PowerBoost, Explorer HEV, Aviator HEV and the hybrid Police Interceptor Utility use the 10R80 MHT. Match what your vehicle was built with.
  • Ford 10R80, not GM 10L80. GM's 10-speed comes from GM plants for GM vehicles. Quote the Ford unit for a Ford or Lincoln.
  • Match engine and drive. Used-yard listings split the F-150's 10R80 by engine (5.0L or 3.5L EcoBoost) and by 2WD or 4WD. Give the supplier your VIN so the right version is quoted.
  • Ask about service bulletins. The lawsuits allege Ford published several technical service bulletins about the shifting complaints. Ask your shop which apply to your vehicle.
  • Get mileage, testing and warranty in writing. Ask for the donor vehicle's mileage, how the transmission was checked, the warranty term and the freight cost to your ZIP before you pay.

Known 10R80 wear points

  • Class-action lawsuits filed over vehicles with the 10R80 allege harsh and erratic shifting (jerking, lunging, clunking and hesitation between gears), and at least one case also cites sudden loss of power. The suits further allege that Ford knew of the problem, redesigned a part called the CDF hub inner sleeve and published several technical service bulletins about it. These are allegations, not findings: some of the suits have been dismissed or partly dismissed, and Wikipedia reported at least one still ongoing as of October 2023. (Wikipedia: Ford–GM 10-speed lawsuits)
  • One case, McCabe v. Ford Motor Company, cites 38 complaints to NHTSA (the federal vehicle safety agency) about the 10R80, covering the 2019–2022 Ford Ranger, 2018–2021 Ford Expedition, 2018–2022 Ford Mustang, 2018–2021 Lincoln Navigator and 2021 Ford F-150. Rows come from Wikipedia's applications list for the 10-speed. Where a lawsuit cited on the same page names the 10R80 in that vehicle, it is shown as a second reference. "Present" means the article's list as fetched in October 2026. Ford also offered other transmissions in some of these models, so always confirm by VIN.

10R80 questions

How much does a used 10R80 transmission cost?

Used-yard asking prices for a 10R80 typically ran $2,603 to $3,580 on October 21, 2026. That range runs from the lowest version's 25th percentile to the highest version's 75th percentile, across 3 versions (242 priced listings). Remanufactured units were listed from $3,999 to $4,320 (17 offers). Prices vary by version, mileage and shipping, so the supplier quotes your exact part.

Does every F-150 from 2017 have a 10R80?

No. In 2017 only the 3.5L EcoBoost F-150 got the 10-speed. From 2018 every F-150 model has it, and the PowerBoost hybrid from 2021 uses the hybrid 10R80 MHT.

Is a GM 10L80 the same as a Ford 10R80?

No. The 10-speed came from a Ford–GM joint venture and was designed by Ford, but each company builds its own version in its own factories. Buy the Ford 10R80 for a Ford or Lincoln and confirm it by VIN.

What problems are reported with the 10R80?

Class-action lawsuits allege harsh and erratic shifting and, in at least one case, sudden loss of power. They are allegations; some suits have been dismissed. Ask the supplier how a used unit was checked before you buy.
