Same family is not the same part. Engines and transmissions in one family can differ in electronics, mounts and accessories. The supplier confirms fit with your VIN before you buy.

Check before you buy a used 4L60E

  • Match the engine. LS-engine 4L60Es have a deeper 7-bolt bell housing and a 300 mm input shaft; other engines use a 6-bolt bell housing and a 298 mm shaft. They are built differently, so match the transmission to your engine.
  • 4L60E or 4L65E? They look the same from the outside. Your vehicle's RPO code (M30 or M32) or VIN tells the supplier which one you need.
  • Match two- or four-wheel drive. Used-parts yards list 4X2 and 4X4 versions under different interchange numbers, so give the supplier your drive type.
  • Ask what's included. Ask whether the torque converter comes with the transmission, and whether it matches your engine.
  • Get mileage, testing and warranty in writing. Ask for the donor vehicle's mileage, how the transmission was tested, the warranty term and the freight cost to your ZIP before you pay.

Rows come from Wikipedia's GM 4L60-E article, which carries a single-source warning. Rows marked 4L65E are the heavier-duty version; rows with no years are listed without years because the article gives none. Australian Holden models and export Caprices are left off. Used-yard listings do not name the transmission, so the price rows show only Silverado 1500 trucks that this table covers. Always confirm by VIN.

4L60E questions

How much does a used 4L60E transmission cost?

Used-yard asking prices for a 4L60E typically ran $600 to $2,613 on October 21, 2026. That range runs from the lowest version's 25th percentile to the highest version's 75th percentile, across 3 versions (294 priced listings). Remanufactured units were listed from $2,199 to $2,849 (184 offers). Prices vary by version, mileage and shipping, so the supplier quotes your exact part.

Can you tell a 4L60E from a 4L65E by looking at it?

No. Wikipedia says the two cannot be told apart from the outside. The 4L65E has five-pinion planetaries and an extra clutch inside. Check your vehicle's RPO code (M30 for the 4L60E, M32 for the 4L65E) or give the supplier your VIN.

Will a 4L60E from a non-LS vehicle fit behind an LS engine?

They are built differently. LS versions use a deeper 7-bolt bell housing and a 300 mm input shaft and converter, while others use a 6-bolt bell housing and a 298 mm shaft. Match the transmission to your engine.

When did GM stop using the 4L60E?

The last ones went into 2013 GM half-ton vans and half-ton trucks with the 4.3 and 4.8 engines. After that the 6L80E replaced it.
