Which 6L80 do you have?
6L80
The standard version, rated for 590 lb-ft of input torque. It went into many GM half-ton pickups and SUVs, the 2006–2013 Corvette, the Camaro (not the V6 models or the ZL1) and the Cadillac STS-V and XLR-V.

A strengthened, uprated version of the 6L80 rated for 885 lb-ft, used mainly in heavy-duty trucks and vans: Silverado and Sierra 2500HD/3500HD with the 6.0 (2007–2019) or the 6.6 L8T (2020–2023), Express and Savana 2500–3500 and Suburban 2500, plus the 2009–2013 Cadillac CTS-V and the 2012–2015 Camaro ZL1. If your vehicle is one of these, ask for a 6L90, not a 6L80.
Source: Wikipedia: GM 6L history, Wikipedia: GM 6L applications2009–2013 GM half-ton pickups: 6L80 or 4L60-E
The 6L80 went into the 5.3 extended and crew cab and the 6.2 from 2009, and the 5.3 regular cab from 2010. Trucks with the 4.3 and 4.8 engines kept the older 4L60-E through 2013. Same truck and year can mean a different transmission, so match by engine and VIN.

Jasper's rebuild notes describe early-style 6L80/90s getting updated stator support shaft seal rings and an updated valve body spacer plate gasket. Ask whether a used unit is early or late style and what has been updated.

- 6L80 or 6L90? They share gear ratios but not torque ratings or applications. Silverado and Sierra 2500HD/3500HD pickups with the 6.0 or 6.6 L8T, Express and Savana 2500–3500 vans, the Suburban 2500, the CTS-V and the Camaro ZL1 use the 6L90.
- Match drive and tow package. Used-yard listings split the same truck's transmission by 2WD or 4WD and, on some years, by factory tow package. Give the supplier your VIN so the right version is quoted.
- Match the engine. On 2009–2013 half-ton pickups the engine and cab decide whether the truck has a 6L80 or a 4L60-E.
- Ask about programming. Jasper's 6L80/90 page has a section on transmission control module (TCM) programming. Ask the supplier or your shop what programming your vehicle needs after the swap.
- Get mileage, testing and warranty in writing. Ask for the donor vehicle's mileage, how the transmission was checked, the warranty term and the freight cost to your ZIP before you pay.

Known 6L80 wear points
- Jasper, a U.S. remanufacturer, lists these 6L80/90 problems its rebuild addresses: torque converter clutch shudder; seal leakage on early-style units causing harsh or delayed shifts and burnt clutches; a P0751 trouble code caused by too little oil reaching a solenoid on early-style units; and control module or CAN software faults that cause drivability problems. Rows come from Wikipedia's GM 6L applications list. No second independent list of 6L80 vehicles was available, and GM offered other transmissions in several of these models in the same years (for example the 4L60-E in 4.3 and 4.8 half-ton pickups), so treat this as a starting point and always confirm by VIN.
6L80 questions
How much does a used 6L80 transmission cost?
Used-yard asking prices for a 6L80 typically ran $1,201 to $3,228 on October 21, 2026. That range runs from the lowest version's 25th percentile to the highest version's 75th percentile, across 3 versions (295 priced listings). Remanufactured units were listed from $2,849 to $3,349 (24 offers). Prices vary by version, mileage and shipping, so the supplier quotes your exact part.
Is a 6L90 the same as a 6L80?
No. The 6L90 is a strengthened, uprated 6L80 rated for 885 lb-ft instead of 590 lb-ft. It went mainly into heavy-duty trucks and vans, plus the CTS-V and Camaro ZL1. The gear ratios are the same, but you should buy the one your vehicle was built with.
Does my 2009–2013 Silverado or Sierra 1500 have a 6L80?
It depends on the engine and cab. The 5.3 extended and crew cab and the 6.2 got the 6L80 from 2009, and the 5.3 regular cab from 2010. Trucks with the 4.3 or 4.8 kept the 4L60-E through 2013. The supplier confirms it from your VIN.
What was the first vehicle with a 6L80?
The 2006 Cadillac STS-V. The other 6L versions first appeared in 2007 model year vehicles.
