Which 6.0 Powerstroke do you have?
Early 2004 build vs later build
Used yards split 2004 Super Duty engines at a September 2003 build date, and by automatic or manual transmission, each with its own interchange numbers. The supplier matches yours by VIN and build date.

Ford detuned the van engine because there is less airflow under the van's hood than in a Super Duty. Yards list it under its own interchange number.

- Match the build date and transmission. 2004 trucks changed engines partway through the year, and yards list automatic and manual versions separately. Give the supplier your VIN so they match the right one.
- Truck or van engine? The E-Series van engine is a detuned version under its own interchange number. Match the vehicle the engine came from.
- Ask about the coolers. Ask whether the oil cooler and EGR cooler have been replaced, and whether the coolant was clean when the engine came out.
- Ask what's included. Long block only, or complete with injectors, high-pressure oil pump, turbo, FICM and harness.
- Get mileage, testing and warranty in writing. Ask for the donor truck's mileage, how the engine was tested, the warranty term and the freight cost to your ZIP before you pay.

Known 6.0 Powerstroke wear points
- Oil cooler and EGR cooler: Wikipedia's Power Stroke article names the in-block oil cooler and the EGR cooler as the main sources of the 6.0's problems; a clogged oil cooler starves the EGR cooler of coolant. Its Super Duty article lists the EGR system among the common failure points. (Wikipedia: Power Stroke 6.0 oil cooler and EGR cooler, Wikipedia: Ford Super Duty)
- Fuel injectors: the Power Stroke article describes injector stiction from missed oil changes and fuel injection control module (FICM) failures from low voltage and heat. Ford's 2013 class-action settlement reimbursed owners for repairs to the EGR system, fuel injectors and turbocharger. (Wikipedia: Power Stroke 6.0 electrical and fuel, Wikipedia: Ford Super Duty)

Each row has two sources: Wikipedia's Power Stroke application list plus the Super Duty, Excursion or E-Series article. The Navistar VT article dates the van engine from 2003, the E-Series article from 2004; this table uses 2004. Wikipedia also lists the 2004–2008 F-650/F-750, which no second source here confirms, so it is left off. Always confirm by VIN.
6.0 Powerstroke questions
How much does a used 6.0 Powerstroke engine cost?
Used-yard asking prices for a 6.0 Powerstroke typically ran $1,213 to $3,287 on October 22, 2026. That range runs from the lowest version's 25th percentile to the highest version's 75th percentile, across 3 versions (201 priced listings). Prices vary by version, mileage and shipping, so the supplier quotes your exact part.
Which years used the 6.0 Powerstroke?
Ford Super Duty trucks from partway through 2003 to 2007, the Excursion from 2003.5 to 2005, and E-Series vans from 2004 to 2010. The 6.4 replaced it in the 2008 Super Duty.
Is the 6.0 Powerstroke the same as the 7.3?
No. The 6.0 is the Navistar VT365, with 4 valves per cylinder and a variable-geometry turbo; the 7.3 is the older T444E. They are different engines, so tell the supplier which one your truck has.
Will a van 6.0 fit my Super Duty?
Do not assume it will. Ford detuned the E-Series version, and yards list it under its own interchange number. The supplier confirms fitment by VIN.
