Which 6.2 V8 do you have?

L92 Vortec 6200 (2007–2008)

Debuted in the 2007 Escalade and was also used in the Yukon Denali, Sierra Denali, Hummer H2 and Tahoe LTZ. No Active Fuel Management: engines built before April 1, 2006 had the hardware but it was never switched on.

L9H (2009–2013)

The flex-fuel L92, still without AFM. This is the 6.2 in 2009–2013 Silverado and Sierra 1500 pickups.

L94 (2010–2013)

The L9H with Active Fuel Management, used in the Escalade and Yukon Denali. Hollander gives it a different part number from the L9H.

L87 (2019 on)

Same power as the L86, but Dynamic Fuel Management can switch between 17 firing orders instead of just V4 and V8. It has a different part number from the L86.

Same family is not the same part. Engines and transmissions in one family can differ in electronics, mounts and accessories. The supplier confirms fit with your VIN before you buy.

Check before you buy a used 6.2 V8

  • Confirm the engine code, not just the size. Send the full VIN. Hollander gives the L92, L9H, L94, L86 and L87 separate part numbers, so a 6.2 from the wrong year is a different part.
  • Gen IV or Gen V? A 2014-or-later L86 or L87 has direct injection and shares few parts with the 2007–2013 engines.
  • AFM, DFM or neither? The L92 and L9H have no cylinder deactivation, the L94 and L86 use Active Fuel Management and the L87 uses Dynamic Fuel Management. Match what your vehicle was built with.
  • Get mileage, testing and warranty in writing. Ask for the donor vehicle's mileage, how the engine was tested, what is included, the warranty term and the freight cost to your ZIP before you pay.

Known 6.2 V8 wear points

  • Wikipedia reports that the L87 faced scrutiny in the 2020s over oiling and main and rod bearing failures. (Wikipedia: issues specific to the L87)
  • Wikipedia reports failures of the special lifters on 2005–2016 Gen IV engines with Active Fuel Management, which applies to the L94; a lifter can stay in AFM mode and put the engine into limp-home mode. (Wikipedia: LS known issues)
  • Jasper, an engine remanufacturer, lists Gen IV lifter noise, cracked heads leading to coolant loss and valve guide wear causing oil consumption among the GM Gen III and IV V8 problems its rebuild addresses, and offers an AFM delete for the 6.2. (Jasper Engines: GM V8 Gen III/IV)

Each row is backed by Wikipedia and by Hollander yard records. Wikipedia also lists the 6.2 in the 2008–2009 Tahoe LTZ, the 2008–2009 Hummer H2, and the Gen V Suburban, Yukon XL and Escalade; no second source here covers those, so they are left off the table. Many of these models were also sold with a 5.3, so always confirm by VIN.

6.2 V8 questions

How much does a used 6.2 V8 engine cost?

Used-yard asking prices for a 6.2 V8 typically ran $2,000 to $6,993 on October 22, 2026. That range runs from the lowest version's 25th percentile to the highest version's 75th percentile, across 5 versions (411 priced listings). Remanufactured units were listed from $4,749 to $6,899 (4 offers). Prices vary by version, mileage and shipping, so the supplier quotes your exact part.

Is the truck 6.2 the same as an LS3?

No. The LS3 is the car version (Corvette, and the manual Camaro SS). Truck and SUV 6.2s carry their own engine codes (L92, L9H, L94, L86 or L87), so ask the supplier for your exact code.

Will an L87 replace my L86?

Not without checking. They make the same power, but the L87 uses Dynamic Fuel Management and has its own part number. Give the supplier your VIN and they confirm what fits.

Which 6.2 is in my Silverado?

On a 2009–2013 Silverado 1500 it is the L9H, on 2014–2018 trucks the L86 and from 2019 the L87. Many Silverados have a 5.3 instead, so the VIN settles it.
