Which 68RFE do you have?

68RFE vs 545RFE

The 68RFE has a larger bellhousing with a different bolt pattern to fit the diesel, stronger internal parts, its own gear ratios and controller programming, and no 2nd-prime downshift gear. A gas-truck 545RFE is not a 68RFE.

66RFE (gas 2500 and 3500)

Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks with gas engines got the 66RFE: 68RFE internals, including the gearset, inside a 545RFE case. It went behind the 5.7 Hemi (2012–2018) and the 6.4 (2014–2018). Ask for the version that matches your engine.

Chassis cabs use Aisin automatics

Wikipedia lists the Aisin AS68RC behind the 6.7 in 3500 Cab & Chassis and 2008 4500/5500 chassis cabs, and Hollander's yard catalog labels the 2008 Ram 3500 chassis-cab automatic AS68RC. A chassis cab does not take a pickup's 68RFE.

2019 and newer 3500 pickups

Hollander splits the 2019 Ram 3500 pickup's 6-speed automatic by factory option code. Option ETL shares its interchange numbers with the 2019 Ram 2500 diesel, which Hollander labels 68RFE. Option ETM has its own numbers and is not named. Give the supplier your VIN.

Early and late pumps

Jasper's rebuild notes treat early 68RFE pumps and early valve parts differently from late ones. Ask whether a used unit is early or late and what has been updated.

Same family is not the same part. Engines and transmissions in one family can differ in electronics, mounts and accessories. The supplier confirms fit with your VIN before you buy.

Check before you buy a used 68RFE

  • Diesel or gas? Only the 6.7 Cummins gets the 68RFE. A gas 2500 or 3500 from 2012 to 2018 has the 66RFE, which has a different case.
  • Pickup or chassis cab? Chassis cabs use Aisin automatics, not the 68RFE.
  • Match the drive. Used-yard listings split the same truck's transmission by 2WD and 4WD. Give the supplier your VIN so the right one is quoted.
  • 2019 or newer 3500? Hollander splits these by factory option code (ETL or ETM). The VIN settles it.
  • Get mileage, testing and warranty in writing. Ask for the donor truck's mileage, how the transmission was checked, the warranty term and the freight cost to your ZIP before you pay.

Known 68RFE wear points

  • Jasper, a U.S. remanufacturer, lists these 68RFE problems its rebuild addresses: underdrive and overdrive clutch failure with burnt clutches; a leaking pump cover; delayed engagement from the converter draining on early pumps; loss of cooler flow and overheating on early models; harsh converter lock-up from a broken accumulator spring; a loose accumulator cover; failed pressure transducers and speed sensors; converter shudder and broken converter springs; and, on heavy-duty units, converter lock-up slip and front cover cracking. Wikipedia lists the 68RFE in Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups with the 6.7 Cummins from 2007 to the present, and Hollander's yard catalog names the 68RFE on 2008, 2011, 2014 and 2019 trucks. Wikipedia gives no year-by-year table, so the year split follows the yard catalog. Chassis cabs and gas trucks use other transmissions. Confirm by VIN.

68RFE questions

How much does a used 68RFE transmission cost?

Used-yard asking prices for a 68RFE typically ran $2,750 to $5,951 on October 22, 2026. That range runs from the lowest version's 25th percentile to the highest version's 75th percentile, across 6 versions (382 priced listings). Prices vary by version, mileage and shipping, so the supplier quotes your exact part.

Is a 66RFE the same as a 68RFE?

No. The 66RFE went into gas Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks. It uses 68RFE internals in a 545RFE case, so it does not bolt up like a diesel 68RFE. Ask for the one your truck was built with.

Does a Ram 3500 chassis cab have a 68RFE?

No. Wikipedia lists the Aisin AS68RC automatic in 6.7 Cummins chassis cabs, and used-yard catalogs list chassis-cab transmissions separately from pickups.

What fluid does a 68RFE take?

Mopar ATF+4, the fluid every RFE transmission uses.
