Asking prices collected October 22, 2026 from U.S. used-yard listings and remanufacturer catalogs. A snapshot, not a quote.

Each used bar runs from the 25th to the 75th percentile of that version's asking prices, so half its listings fall inside it, and the dot marks the median. The supplier quotes your exact part, shipping and warranty.

Which 4R70W do you have?

4R70W

The original version, used across Ford's rear-drive cars and light trucks. Behind the 5.4L V8 it gets a stronger gearset than in normal-duty units.

4R75W

A 2003 revision that was not used on every 2003 model and gradually replaced the 4R70W. In the Crown Victoria it was used only in the 2004 Police Interceptor.

4R70E and 4R75E

Later versions designed for electronic throttle control. The Crown Victoria moved to the 4R70E for 2005 and the 4R75E for 2006; the Expedition used the 4R75E for 2005–2006. They are not drop-in swaps for an older 4R70W.

Same family is not the same part. Engines and transmissions in one family can differ in electronics, mounts and accessories. The supplier confirms fit with your VIN before you buy.

Check before you buy a used 4R70W

  • 4R70W or 4R100? A 5.4L F-150 can have either. Standard-load trucks have the 4R70W; Lightning, Harley-Davidson and payload-package trucks have the heavier 4R100. Your VIN settles it.
  • W or E? From 2004–2006 Ford moved to the electronic-throttle 4R70E and 4R75E. Quote the version your vehicle was built with.
  • Match engine and drive. Used-yard listings split the F-150 unit by engine (4.2L, 4.6L, 5.4L) and by 2WD or 4WD, and the Crown Victoria by police package. Give the supplier your VIN.
  • Get mileage, testing and warranty in writing. Ask for the donor vehicle's mileage, how the transmission was checked, the warranty term and the freight cost to your ZIP before you pay.

Known 4R70W wear points

  • In 1998 Ford replaced the 4R70W's intermediate one-way roller clutch with a mechanical diode because of durability concerns. A pre-1998 unit has the older part, so ask which one you are getting. (Wikipedia: Ford AOD transmission, 4R70W)
