Which 700R4 do you have?

Early 700R4 (1982–1984)

The original 27-spline input shaft was a common failure point. From 1984, units built for Chevrolet small-block V8s got a 30-spline input shaft.

Updated 700R4 (1984–1987 changes)

Internal parts from the ring gear to the oil pump housing were updated between 1984 and 1987, ending with an auxiliary valve body on units built after October 1986.

4L60 (1990 on)

The same hydraulic transmission under GM's new name (RPO MD8). It is not the electronic 4L60E that replaced it, which needs a computer to shift.

Same family is not the same part. Engines and transmissions in one family can differ in electronics, mounts and accessories. The supplier confirms fit with your VIN before you buy.

Check before you buy a used 700R4

  • 700R4 or 4L60E? 1993-and-later trucks and 1994-and-later cars have the electronic 4L60E, which needs a computer to shift. Our 4L60E page covers those.
  • Check the pan. A 700R4 or 4L60 has a rectangular oil pan with 16 bolts.
  • Match the engine and drive. Hollander gives 2WD and 4WD, and gasoline and diesel, units different part numbers. Tell the supplier your engine and drive.
  • Get mileage, testing and warranty in writing. Ask for the donor vehicle's mileage, how the transmission was tested, what is included, the warranty term and the freight cost to your ZIP before you pay.

Wikipedia's applications list mixes the 700R4 with the later 4L60E, and its 700R4 section carries citation warnings, so this table keeps only rows where Hollander yard listings name the TH700 for that vehicle. Wikipedia says the 1993 Camaro, Corvette and GMC Typhoon had the last production 700R4; those and the Blazer, Jimmy and Suburban are left off because no second source here confirms the years. Always confirm by VIN.

700R4 questions

How much does a used 700R4 transmission cost?

Used-yard asking prices for a 700R4 typically ran $409 to $2,444 on October 22, 2026. That range runs from the lowest version's 25th percentile to the highest version's 75th percentile, across 3 versions (99 priced listings). Prices vary by version, mileage and shipping, so the supplier quotes your exact part.

Is a 700R4 the same as a 4L60?

Yes. GM renamed the 700R4 the 4L60 in 1990. Both are hydraulically shifted. The 4L60E that replaced them is electronic and is not a simple swap.

Can I put a 4L60E in place of my 700R4?

Not easily. The 4L60E needs a powertrain control module to shift, which a 700R4 vehicle does not have. Ask the supplier for a 700R4 matched to your vehicle.

Why are some used 700R4 prices so low?

These units are more than 30 years old, and yard asking prices vary widely with condition and mileage. Ask the supplier how the unit was tested before you compare prices.
