- 12-valve, 24-valve or common rail? The three generations use different injection pumps and electronics. A 1998 truck can be either, because the switch came midway through the model year. Give the supplier your VIN.
- Automatic or manual? Used yards file many 5.9s by transmission, and the 2001–2002 High Output engine came only with the NV5600 manual. Tell the supplier which transmission your truck has.
- Ask about the injection pump. Ask whether the pump and injectors come with the engine and whether they were tested. On 1998.5–2002 trucks, ask about the VP44 pump in particular.
- Ask what's included. Long block only, or complete with turbo, injection pump, injectors and harness.
- Get mileage, testing and warranty in writing. Ask for the donor vehicle's mileage, how the engine was tested, the warranty term and the freight cost to your ZIP before you pay.

Known 5.9 Cummins wear points
- Wikipedia notes that the Bosch VP44 injection pump used on 1998.5–2002 Ram 24-valve engines had higher failure rates than the older P7100 pump on the 12-valve. (Wikipedia: Dodge Ram ISB)
