Which 3.5 EcoBoost do you have?
First generation, F-150 (2011–2016)
Direct injection only, a single primary timing chain, and BorgWarner K03 turbos. Mounted lengthwise for rear- and four-wheel drive.
Source: Wikipedia: EcoBoost 3.5 (first generation)First generation, transverse (Taurus SHO, Explorer, Flex)
Mounted sideways with Garrett turbos. The water pump sits behind the timing cover and is driven by the timing chain, so it is not a bolt-on swap with the truck engine.
Source: Wikipedia: EcoBoost 3.5 (first generation), Hollander: 2014 Ford Explorer engine optionsSecond generation, D35 (2017 F-150 on)
Adds port injection alongside direct injection, two primary timing chains in place of one, electronic wastegates and a redesigned cam phaser. Used from the 2017 F-150 and the 2018 Expedition and Navigator.
Source: Wikipedia: EcoBoost 3.5 (second generation)High Output (Raptor, Navigator)
A 450 hp version with lower compression powers the 2017–2020 F-150 Raptor and High Output, and the Navigator from 2018. Its turbos and tune differ from the standard engine.

- First or second generation? A 2017-or-later engine adds port injection and a twin-chain cam drive. Give the supplier your VIN so they match the generation.
- Truck or transverse engine? The F-150 and Expedition engine sits lengthwise; the Taurus SHO and Explorer engine sits sideways with different turbos and a chain-driven water pump. They are listed under different interchange numbers.
- Not every 3.5 is an EcoBoost. Ford also sold a 3.5 V6 without turbos in the same trucks and SUVs. Make sure the quote is for the twin-turbo engine.
- Ask what's included. Long block only, or complete with both turbos, intake, injectors and harness.
- Get mileage, testing and warranty in writing. Ask for the donor vehicle's mileage, how the engine was tested, whether the cam phasers have been replaced, the warranty term and the freight cost to your ZIP before you pay.

Known 3.5 EcoBoost wear points
- Timing chain wear: Wikipedia says Ford moved to two primary chains on the second generation partly to minimize the chain stretch seen on first-generation engines, and Jasper lists timing chain failure first among the problems its 3.5 EcoBoost rebuilds address. (Wikipedia: EcoBoost 3.5 (second generation), Jasper Engines: Ford V6 EcoBoost / Duratec)
- Cam phasers: Wikipedia reports variable cam timing units failing on 2020-and-earlier engines, covered by Ford Customer Satisfaction Program 21N03, and a redesigned replacement part. (Wikipedia: EcoBoost VCT phaser issues)
- Jasper, an engine and transmission remanufacturer, also lists water pump failure on transverse engines, cam bore wear, head gasket failure, rod bearing failure, low oil pressure and knocking, and valve guide wear among the problems its rebuilds address. (Jasper Engines: Ford V6 EcoBoost / Duratec)
