Which 5.4 Triton do you have?

2-valve (1997–2004 trucks, E-Series to 2017)

SOHC with two valves per cylinder. 235 hp in 1997–1998, then 260 hp. E-Series vans kept the 2-valve through 2017.

3-valve VCT (2004 F-150 on)

Three valves per cylinder and variable cam timing. Came to North America in the redesigned 2004 F-150 (not the 2004 F-150 Heritage), then the 2005 Expedition, Navigator and Super Duty.

Not a Triton: Navigator DOHC (1999–2004)

The 1999–2004 Lincoln Navigator used a DOHC 4-valve 5.4 that Ford called InTech. Same displacement, different heads, so it is not interchangeable with a Triton.

Same family is not the same part. Engines and transmissions in one family can differ in electronics, mounts and accessories. The supplier confirms fit with your VIN before you buy.

Check before you buy a used 5.4 Triton

  • 2-valve or 3-valve? The heads, cam timing and spark plugs differ, and the two do not swap. Give the supplier your VIN so they match the right one.
  • Truck, SUV or van engine? Yards list the 3-valve F-150, Expedition/Navigator and Super Duty engines under different interchange numbers. Match the vehicle the engine came from.
  • Gasoline, flex fuel or CNG? Flex-fuel, CNG, bi-fuel and Lightning engines carry their own interchange numbers. Tell the supplier which one your vehicle was built with.
  • Ask about the spark plugs. On a 3-valve, ask whether the plugs have been changed and the threads checked. On a 2-valve, ask about stripped plug threads.
  • Get mileage, testing and warranty in writing. Ask for the donor vehicle's mileage, how the engine was tested, the warranty term and the freight cost to your ZIP before you pay.

Known 5.4 Triton wear points

  • Spark plugs: Wikipedia cites Ford service bulletins on 2-valve heads with stripped or under-cut plug threads, and on 3-valve 5.4s built before October 9, 2007, whose two-piece plugs can seize and break off in the head. Jasper also lists spark plug thread damage among the problems its Triton rebuilds address. (Wikipedia: Ford Modular engine, spark plug issues, Jasper Engines: Ford Triton 4.6 / 5.4 / 6.8)
  • Jasper, an engine and transmission remanufacturer, lists these other problems its 4.6, 5.4 and 6.8 Triton rebuilds address: oil pressure problems with VVT codes and upper-end noise, worn VVT actuators on 3-valve engines, head gasket failure, cylinder blow-by, and bearing failure with knocking. (Jasper Engines: Ford Triton 4.6 / 5.4 / 6.8)

The 3-valve has three valves per cylinder and variable cam timing, and makes 300 hp against 260 hp for the 1999–2004 2-valve. It arrived in the redesigned 2004 F-150 and the 2005 Expedition and Super Duty. The two are not interchangeable.

Which vehicles used the 5.4 Triton?

The Ford F-150 from 1997 to 2010, the Expedition from 1997 to 2014, the F-250 and F-350 Super Duty from 1999 to 2010, the Excursion from 2000 to 2005, E-Series vans from 1997 to 2017, and the 2005–2014 Lincoln Navigator. The supplier confirms fitment by VIN.
