Which 48RE do you have?
48RE vs 47RE
The 48RE is a stronger, internally upgraded 47RE: a higher-volume 10-lobe pump, a bigger direct drum and converter lock-up in manual 2nd. They are separate parts with different interchange numbers in the yard catalog, so a 47RE is not quoted as a 48RE.

Hollander lists the 2003 Ram 2500 standard-output diesel automatic two ways: option DG8 (48RE) and option DGP (47RE), each with its own interchange number. The High Output engine has its own listing. The VIN and the build sheet settle which one your truck has.

Early 48REs still used a mechanical throttle valve (TV) cable. From 2004.5 to 2007 the 48RE used a transmission throttle valve actuator (TTVA) motor instead. Ask which one a used unit has.

Ram 2500 and 3500 diesel and V10 automatics from 1996 to 2002 are the 47RE era. Hollander's 2001 Ram 2500 lists them under different numbers from the 48RE. Ask for a 47RE quote for these trucks.

- 48RE or 47RE? 2003 and early 2004 trucks can have either. The two carry different interchange numbers, so give the supplier your VIN.
- 5.9 or 6.7? A 2007 Ram with the 5.9 Cummins has the 48RE. A 2007.5 with the 6.7 has the 6-speed 68RFE.
- Match the drive. Used-yard listings split the 48RE by 2WD and 4WD.
- TV cable or TTVA? Early 48REs used a throttle valve cable; 2004.5 to 2007 units used an electric actuator. Make sure the used unit matches your truck.
- Get mileage, testing and warranty in writing. Ask for the donor truck's mileage, how the transmission was checked, the warranty term and the freight cost to your ZIP before you pay.

| Dodge Ram 2500 / 3500 pickup5.9 Cummins diesel automatics. Some 2003 and early 2004 trucks have the 47RE; 2007.5 trucks with the 6.7 have the 68RFE. Confirm by VIN. | 2003–2007 |
Wikipedia lists the A618 family in 2003–2007 Ram 2500 and 3500 diesel pickups, and Hollander's yard catalog names the 48RE on 2003 and 2005 Ram 2500 diesels. Wikipedia says the 48RE also went behind the V10, but no second source confirms which V10 years, so those trucks are left off this table. Confirm by VIN.
48RE questions
How much does a used 48RE transmission cost?
Used-yard asking prices for a 48RE typically ran $2,205 to $4,411 on October 22, 2026. That range runs from the lowest version's 25th percentile to the highest version's 75th percentile, across 4 versions (218 priced listings). Remanufactured units were listed at $3,399 (5 offers). Prices vary by version, mileage and shipping, so the supplier quotes your exact part.
Is a 47RE the same as a 48RE?
No. The 48RE is the stronger, internally upgraded successor, with a higher-volume pump and a bigger direct drum. Used-yard catalogs give them different interchange numbers.
Does a 2007 Ram 2500 have a 48RE?
If it has the 5.9 Cummins, yes. A 2007.5 truck with the 6.7 Cummins has the 6-speed 68RFE.
Does my 2003 Ram have a 48RE?
It might. Hollander lists 2003 Ram 2500 diesels with a 48RE (option DG8) and with a 47RE (option DGP). The VIN settles it.
